Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker will miss the start of the season with a knee injury he picked up in Friday’s pre-season draw with Lens. Arsene Wenger said the massive German will be out for “a few months”. He didn’t travel with the rest of the Arsenal squad for their two match tour of the US. This will mean that Gabriel and Koscielny will start at the back for Arsenal, despite Wenger signing Rob Holding from Bolton who is also a centre-back. Last season Mertesacker, who joined in 2011, played 24 Premier League matches as the Gunners finished second to Leicester.
